| Many Vanson items are designed so that you may add armor for additional protection. Jackets can be reinforced in the shoulder, elbow/forearm, and back. Hip and knee/shin armor is available for pants. Vanson provides three types - foam street armor, European specification armor, and hard GP armor. All will fit in your Vanson garment.
The street armor is made of foam. The knee and elbow pieces are articulated so they move with you. The armor pieces have elastic strips with velcro sewn on, which attach to velcro that is already installed in your jacket or pants. It is fairly flexible and easy to wear. The armor comes in different sizes. Small will fit women's jackets up to size 12 and men's jackets up to size 40. Medium fits women's jacket above size 12, and men's jackets sizes 42-46. Large is for men's jackets size 48 and up. Available for knees, hips, elbows, and shoulders.
The CE armor (European spec) is made of hard foam pieces encapsulated in softer foam. It attaches via elastic strips with velcro sewn on. The hard material is similar to the inner shell of a helmet. This type of armor is designed to crush during an impact. In other words, it won't work twice. If you land on it, you must replace it. In terms of comfort, it is between the foam armor and the GP armor. It is not overly bulky and it's flexible, but it is hard. It is available for knees, elbows, and shoulders.
The GP armor was developed for track use. It gives a higher level of protection, but it is bulkier and not as comfortable, especially for long periods in the saddle. It is made of hard plastic sewn to a layer of hard foam. It attaches via velcro and is available for knees, elbows, and shoulders.
Installation is the same for all types. Don't be surprised if you have to move the pieces around a few times before you find the spot that works best for you.
The jackets have a zipper in the lining, just above the waistband in back. From there, you can reach in to position your armor. It's easier if you do the elbow pieces before the shoulder pieces. The back protector also fits through this opening.
The pants which are armor compatible have linings which are not attached to the leather in the area around the fly. Put the knee armor in first. The two lobes of the hip pieces point forward and the larger one goes on top.
